Beginners Kitesurfing

Beginners kitesurfing is a real passion for team leader Gray Robinson. If you want to learn, he wants to teach you. Gray loves to introduce new people to the sport and loves helping them progress from rookie to rockstar in a few easy steps.

Kitesurfing can seem daunting at first but with expert guidance you can progress much more quickly than you might think. We’ll teach you everything from scratch. By the end of the course you’ll find out where it’s safe to kite surf, how to fly a power kite and gain the skills and confidence you need to get up on your board and fly

What will you learn?

Beginners Kitesurfing Course

Our beginners kitesurfing course is scheduled to run over 3 days. Because beginners need a high level of attention we highly recommend private lessons for beginners – it’s the quickest way learn how to kitesurf and for you to make progress. Making progress will make you happy, and we want you to be happy!

Everyone progresses at a different rate but this is roughly what you’ll be doing on each day of the course.

Day 1 begins with spot identification, reading the weather and safety procedures. Then you’ll learn to set up and fly a trainer kite and a full size kite. You might move on to body dragging and even board starts.

Day 2 kicks off with a refresh of what you learn on day 1. You’ll probably do a recap of body dragging then some board starts and if your confidence and skill levels are high enough move on to some short rides downwind.

Day 3 starts with another recap, and everyone should be getting up on the board, trying some downwind riding and with a bit of luck and a following wind you’ll attempt some upwind riding and your first transitions.

For a detailed breakdown of the minimum we’d hope to teach you take a look at the day tabs at the top of the page. If you’re ready to learn more than that, we’re here to teach you how.

We’ll never push you harder than you want to go but we’ll always try and help you make as much progress as possible.

Why choose in Tarifa?

Tarifa

Tarifa is a fantastic place to learn to kitesurf. Our unique location on the Strait of Gibraltar means it’s almost always windy in Tarifa, and the presence of the Sea Angels rescue boats on the main kite beach at Los Lances mean that every wind direction is kiteable there. There are also many other great kite spots in and near Tarifa where beginners can learn.

The tidal lagoons at Los Lances and Valdevaqueros are ideal spots to practice your first board starts without having to worry about being dragged around by waves or getting a mouthful of salt water. The more sheltered beaches at Bolonia, Palmones and Los Canos de Meca mean that when the wind is too strong to learn in Tarifa there are plenty of options only a short drive away.

The consistent wind and variety of spots on offer are the reason that Tarifa is the kitesurfing capital of Europe. And remember, if you learn to kitesurf here you can kitesurf confidently anywhere, so Tarifa is probably the best place in the world to learn to be an independent kite surfer.

How we work

Graykite's Teaching Methodology

Our beginners lessons focus on you and the way you want to learn. We understand that different people learn in different ways so Gray has devised a teaching methodology that will help you learn in the way that suits you best.

As we said above, because beginners benefit from lots of attention we suggest private lessons while you learn the basics. It’s the quickest way to get up on your kiteboard and riding. Once you’ve got the key skills down you can switch to semi private or group lessons to make new friends while you improve your kitesurfing skills and save some mojito money!

As a total beginner I booked starter lessons for ten days with Grey. You realize fast that he has perfect longstanding experience in kiting and is additionally a highly professional trainer. Not only did I learn so much in such a short time with him, I also always felt perfectly safe and confident. As he knows his freestyle, Grey is also a great trainer for more experienced kiters. I highly recommend his training! It was both, fun and professional! Thanks!
